West Deptford dominates in first win over Haddonfield since 2019

WEST DEPTFORD — The Philadelphia Eagles won a Super Bowl behind a dominant offensive line in 2024.

The team adopted Too Short’s hit “Blow the Whistle” as their unofficial theme song on their championship voyage.

East of the Delaware River, a different Eagles team used a similar formula that had a group of fans leaving Clyde Folsom Field in their vehicle blaring the same tune on Friday night.

West Deptford churned out 225 yards on the ground in a 28-0 shutout of longtime rival Haddonfield in a West Jersey Football League Continental Division showdown.

It was the Eagles first win against their arch nemesis from Camden County since 2019.

Charles Schriver IV, a four-year starter in the trenches, remembered his first loss against the Bulldogs as a freshman.

He admitted he cried.

His play along the line of scrimmage reversed the outcome on Friday.

“This group of seniors,” Schriver IV said, “we were 0-3 against them. I still remember leaving there getting blown out. It was 35-0 on that field and I left crying. My dad told me to remember that. We kind of just used those losses over the last two years, the tight ones, as motivation throughout the week.”

Zamir Davis scored the first of his two touchdown runs in the first quarter. A 26-yard pass by Tim Holmes, Jr. — one of only three pass attempts for the Eagles — to Curtis Pearson, Jr. handed West Deptford a 14-0 lead at intermission. Davis’ second TD run and a one-yard plunge by Cole Paskiewicz put the bow on the victory.

Davis had 77 yards on the ground and Paskiewicz added 86.

“The game plan was to dominate the line of scrimmage,” Davis said.

Paskiewicz intercepted a pass and Kameron Simpkins recovered a fumble on defense. It was West Deptford’s second shutout of the season.

“We had great pressure up front,” Paskiewicz said. “Great coverage downfield. … It feels great and we have Homecoming tomorrow.”

Homecoming and a 5-0 record.

It’s the Eagles second consecutive 5-0 start through five games under coach John Emel.

And the fifth win was far from just another win.

“It’s not any other game,” Emel said, “it’s a game against a great program. We were both undefeated. … They knew it was a big opportunity for a program to get a good win. And we played like it tonight. We played hungry.”
