Big Ten recruit flashes big-play ability, helps team to win in battle of reigning N.J. football state champions

GLASSBORO — Marvin Slomsky Stadium set a new attendance record as spectators filled the bleachers and crowded the yellow poly cap-topped fences that surrounded the grass field on the campus of Glassboro High School.

A sellout crowd was imminent with the two-time defending Group 1 state champion Bulldogs hosting two-time reigning Group 4 state champion Winslow Township.

The Eagles’ 21-game unbeaten streak against South Jersey opponents was on the line. No current team in New Jersey had won more games in a row (29) than Glassboro.

Numerous Division I recruits in action.

One of those players, Ka’ron Ceaser, a Penn State commit, provided a 85-yard kick return touchdown that served as a definitive moment for Winslow. It helped the Eagles soar to a 21-7 win on Friday and keep their record unblemished against teams from the traditional seven-county South Jersey area since November 17, 2023.

Ceaser’s burst down the opponent’s sideline came on the first play of the second half with the score tied 7-7. It gave the visitors a lead they’d never relinquish.

“I knew I had to make something shake,” Ceaser said, “get the momentum on our side. I know my speed, my acceleration. I hit a hole and I was gone.”

“No. 9 is a playmaker,” Winslow coach Jamal White said. “We trust him to come out and make plays and we try to get the ball in his hands when we can.”

The Eagles were limited to 21 yards on the ground. They averaged 0.9 yards per attempt. Winslow also received 13 penalties for 84 yards.

The defensive unit was the difference in a battle between N.J. public high school football powers, as it allowed zero points with Glassboro’s only touchdown being a 28-yard interception return by Oregon recruit Xavier Sabb. Winslow Township limited Sabb to 32 yards from scrimmage.

The Eagles forced three turnovers, including an incredible one-handed grab by Jayion Moss on a jump ball on the second play from scrimmage. Moss was also responsible for a forced fumble inside the 20 that erased a fourth-down conversion by the Bulldogs with Winslow clinging to a 14-7 lead with 9:56 left. Pierce Noel also snared an INT.

“They’ve been playing hard all season,” White said. “I lean on them. They’re holding teams to minimal points and that helps me as an offensive coordinator.”

Toledo commit Andrew Kratee was a defensive standout in coverage outside the hashes. He shined on offense with four receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown. His TD catch from Javon Thompson was the first score of the contest and ensured the Eagles would never trail.

“The slant routes were open,” Kratee said.

Trey Alexander ran for a TD in the victory.

White, a former Woodbury and Timber Creek assistant coach, took over after state champion coach Bill Belton departed for St. Augustine.

So far, the Eagles have not missed a beat with him at the helm.

“It’s great because the kids are believing,” White said. “They’re believing more and more each and every week. Just to see the smiles on their faces, the excitement of them winning this football game, it’s amazing.”
