Hammonton avenges early season loss to Egg Harbor Township with triumph in Cape-Atlantic League tourney (PHOTOS)

HAMMONTON - The fifth-seeded Hammonton High School boys' basketball team cruised past Egg Harbor Township, 65-49, in the first round of the Cape-Atlantic League Tournament on Wednesday night. The Blue Devils improved their record to 15-6.


Hammonton junior Kenny Smith exploded for a game-high 24 points in the victory. Jake Edwards finished with 19 and Azzir Bey-Smith added nine. Bryce Nicholson finished with seven points. The Blue Devils trailed 28-22 at halftime before they outscored EHT, 25-9, in the third quarter.


Hammonton will visit fourth-seeded Atlantic City in the CAL Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday. The Blue Devils have won 13 out of their last 16 games.


Jayden Dixon paced Egg Harbor Township (6-20 record) with a team-high 16 points in the setback. Bradley Smith finished with 14 and freshman Jalen Bell added 13.


The Blue Devils' victory avenged a 44-36 loss to the defending South Jersey Group 4 champions on December 22. Bell led the Eagles with 13 points in the triumph. Smith finished with eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Jake Karp tallied 11 points, three assists, three rebounds and three steals. Smith-Bey finished with 10 points and six rebounds in the loss. Greg Smith charted nine points, five rebounds and two steals. Kenny Smith (17.8 points per game this season) was limited to seven points. Nicholson led Hammonton with 10 rebounds.
