Boys basketball recap - D.J. Wagner's off ball defense hidden ingredient in Camden victory

Camden's D.J. Wagner attempts a free throw against Paul VI in the Camden County Tournament quarterfinals at Sterling High School in Somerdale, New Jersey on Saturday, February 11, 2023. Collin Conway/D2 Sports Network

The Paul VI High School boys basketball team jumped out to a 13-6 lead after Emmanuel Joe-Samuel hit three 3-pointers over the first five minutes of the first quarter.

From that point on, Camden's D.J. Wagner took on the challenge of guarding Joe-Samuel on and off the ball allowing only two points while guarding him. The defensive adjustment fueled Camden as the offense got going to cut the lead to one at the end of the first quarter.

The Panthers eventually pulled away for a 74 - 56 victory in Camden County Tournament quarterfinals at Sterling High School on Saturday morning.

Wagner scored 19 points over the span of the second and third quarters to finish with a game-high 26 points. Dasear Haskins scored eight of his 13 points in the opening quarter to keep pace with Paul VI.
