Saturday's slate of games features a historic rivalry, a sectional championship rematch and a crossover between two reigning South Jersey regional champions. Here's a breakdown of Saturday's top games with players to watch, and a complete schedule of games involving teams located throughout the traditional seven-county South Jersey region:
West Deptford (1-2 ) at Paulsboro (0-3), 11 am
Only 5.6 miles of pavement spanning Route 130's conjunction with Interstate 295 and a handful of right turns separate these two rivals.
But a lengthy history of competitions has distanced them further apart.
Paulsboro has dominated in the last two matchups outscoring the Eagles 45-3 in a pair of wins.
And West Deptford is certainly eyeing redemption.
The Eagles fell to Camden, 33-10, last Friday. West Deptford cruised past Camden Catholic, 55-6, for its lone win of the campaign on September 9, and suffered a narrow 14-7 loss to an experienced Woodbury team in Week One.
Lawrence Howard leads the Eagles with 182 yards on the ground and has ran for a touchdown. Senior David Davis has also tallied 177 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Seniors Ben Marraffa, Alex Swietanski and Rahmeer Vaughn have all registered a fumble recovery on defense. Swietanski also has a rushing touchdown on his resume.
The Red Raiders suffered a 46-8 thumping to Woodbury last Saturday. It marked the first time Paulsboro started a season with a 0-3 record since 1974. First-year coach Kevin Harvey is still seeking his first win at the helm.
Senior Rocco Pellegrini has thrown for 193 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions under center. 2022 South Jersey Sports Zone Preseason All-South Jersey Third Team selection Preston Moore has racked up a team-best 101 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The senior did not play against the Thundering Herd due to an injury. Damire Avant, Javon Bagby and Jamile Gantt provide the Red Raiders with elite speed.
Junior Sharif Green leads the team in interceptions after picking off a pass for a touchdown in a 44-26 setback to Haddonfield on September 3. Senior Jordon Eli has registered 2.5 sacks and a pair of tackles for loss.
Cedar Creek (2-2) at Salem (3-1), 12 pm
The defending NJSIAA South Group 3 regional champions entered last Saturday's showdown against Camden Eastside desperate for a win. The Pirates were successful in their attempt as a two-yard rushing touchdown from Mekhi Harvey lifted them to a 7-6 victory. The senior has accumulated 426 yards and three touchdowns on the ground this season. Harvey also has 11 tackles and an interception on defense.
Senior Mike Sears has been a brute force on defense racking up 29 tackles, six tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery. 2022 SJ Sports Zone Preseason All-South Jersey Second Team selection Malik Moore-Summers has complemented Sears' efforts with 22 tackles, five tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and an interception.
Salem survived an upset bid from Penns Grove, squeaking out a 20-14 win last Saturday. Senior Jahki Coates tossed a 28-yard touchdown pass and ran for another score in the victory. Coates leads the Rams' potent offensive attack with 667 passing yards, 314 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns (nine passing, six rushing). 2022 SJ Sports Zone Preseason All-South Jersey First Team selection Ramaji Bundy leads Salem with 220 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Anthony Selby is another threat with a team-high 13 receptions for 186 yards and a pair of scores.
Amare Smith powers the defense with his ability to rush off the edge. Smith has racked up 19.5 tackles with a team-best four sacks and a forced fumble. Sophomore Daviyonn Jackson leads the team with 24 tackles and has also forced a fumble. Ben Pittman has contributed 20 tackles and a sack. Jamal Williams has generated 14 tackles and a pair of sacks. The senior also returned an interception for a touchdown in last week's victory against Penns Grove.
Shawnee (3-1) at Winslow (0-2), 7 pm
Last season, the Eagles etched out a 34-22 win over Shawnee to capture the Central Jersey Group 4 sectional crown - their first sectional title in program history.
On Saturday, the Renegades will hit Route 534 seeking redemption. Shawnee has won four out of the last five matchups in the series.
Tim Gushue's squad is also coming off a hard-fought 21-14 loss to district rival Cherokee last Friday.
Junior quarterback Joe Papa has 12 touchdowns (five passing, seven rushing) through four games and has racked up a team-best 387 rushing yards. Senior Ethan Krauss has been Papa's favorite target hauling in 13 catches for 173 yards and a pair of scores. Defensively, the Renegades' are led by linebackers Josh Peluse and Sam Beamer. Peluse leads the unit with 29 tackles and shares the team-lead with sophomore John Prokapus in sacks with two. Beamer has racked up 24 tackles and snared an interception in a 48-14 triumph over Camden Eastside.
Winslow, under the direction of first-year coach and former Penn State running back Bill Belton, dropped back-to-back games to Northern Highlands and Delsea before having a bye week. The Eagles have been short-handed in those matchups with Kameron Brown, Omari Chambers, Kenneth “Deuce” Everett and Darrien Smith all missing time. 2025 Penn State target Cam Miller has also played with a broken wrist, per the Courier-Post's Josh Friedman.
Dual-threat quarterback Jimmy Wilson, Jr. leads the offense with 311 passing yards, a passing touchdown, and has also ran for two scores. Penn State commit Ejani Shakir has 18 receptions for 159 yards and a touchdown through two games. Senior Jamil Peterson is a hard-nosed runner that leads the team with 136 rushing yards and provides experience on defense.
