Reigning state champion puts undefeated record on the line and delivers

SEWELL (N.J.) - The Washington Township High School football team is currently sitting in the high roller lounge in South Jersey. The Minutemen push all of their chips in each week facing off with the opponent on the other sideline. This week was no different.

The undefeated Group V power came away with the entire pot in a 39-20 come-from-behind victory over Millville on its home turf. Despite the final score, things were not entirely smooth for the Minutemen, especially in the first quarter.

The Bolts bolted out to a 14-0 lead thanks to a Reggie Holley rushing touchdown followed by a 96-yard pick-six by Holley not long after. The Cumberland County program would stall out there for the majority of the game from that point on.

Washington Township answered back with an Isaac Parra rushing touchdown and a Lucas McCabe pick-six to knot things up at halftime.

The Minutemen then ripped off an extra 25 unanswered points, sealing the victory and adding another victory to their already undefeated streak, making it 16 wins in a row for the Gloucester County football club. Drew Dorsey and Elijah Cole found the end zone twice each in the second half, proving to be the difference.

"We never had a doubt in our minds," McCabe said when asked what the mood on the sideline was like down 14-0 early. "We know what we have. We practice situations like this on offense and defense. 2-minute offense, up-tempo packages, certain schemes on defense; we prepare for every possible scenario."

"I'm not sure who tipped the ball on the play where I scored. I was in coverage and saw the receiver slip, and next thing I know the ball is in my hands."

Even though the Minutemen are 2-0 to start their season and 16-0 dating back to last year's season-opening win over Hillsborough, they're still not at 100% or full strength. Former Winslow quarterback and the state's all-time passing touchdowns leader Jalen Parker is still waiting to be deemed eligible, now sitting two of the required four games due to transfer rules.

"We've still yet to hit our stride," Washington Township coach Mike Schatzman said. " There's some guys we're waiting on to be eligible and get healthy and Jalen (Parker) is one of them. He's been such a great help on the sidelines during games and practices. Without even playing, the impact he's made in helping Danny (Carter) and just being a great kid is more than we could've asked for."
