Villanova commit CJ Furey strikes out 10 as St. Augustine baseball blanks Hammonton in five innings

HAMMONTON (N.J.) - Villanova commit C.J. Furey pitched a five-inning, complete game shutout as St. Augustine topped Hammonton, 10-0, in a Cape-Atlantic League American Division matchup on Wednesday. Furey tallied 10 strikeouts, one walk and allowed zero runs over five innings.


St. Augustine improved its record to 5-1.


The Hermits took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a RBI double by Old Dominion commit Marco Levari that plated Furey. Levari finished 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. The Old Dominion commit also reached base on a hit by pitch.


St. Augustine extended its lead to 3-0 on a pair of one-run singles by Manny Aponte and John Podgorski in the top of the third inning. Jake Meyers and Levari scored in the frame.


A six-run spurt in the top of the fourth inning stretched the Hermits' lead to 9-0. Gabe Gillespie drove in two runs on a double and later scored on a double by David Cappuccio. Jack Cappuccio drove in a pair of runs on a single.


Levari knocked in Meyers on a single in the top of the fifth to make it 10-0.


Drew Haines notched a pair of singles for Hammonton. Jamison McNally received the loss on the mound for the Blue Devils (2-4 record). McNally allowed three hits and three earned runs over 2.2 innings. He struck out four batters and walked six.
