Moorestown survives in overtime against Barnegat, advances to sixth straight Group 3 sectional semifinal (PHOTOS)

MOORESTOWN - The Moorestown High School boys' basketball team watched a seven-point lead with 1:06 left in regulation disappear.

The fourth-seeded Quakers avoided the upset with a 60-52 victory over 12th-seeded Barnegat in the South Jersey Group 3 quarterfinals on Tuesday night. C.J. Hayes led Moorestown with a team-high 14 points. North Carolina baseball commit Ryan Lynch and Cole Pitcher each added 11 in the triumph.

Barnegat concluded its campaign with a 17-10 record. Mason Krey led the Bengals with a game-high 22 points and Jamari Smith added 15. The Ocean County program upset fifth-seeded Timber Creek in the first round of the S.J. Group 3 playoffs.

The Quakers improved their record to 20-8 and will visit top-seeded Mainland in the South Jersey Group 3 semifinals on Thursday at 4 pm. Moorestown defeated the Mustangs, 32-29, on a buzzer beater by Josh Byrd in last year's sectional semifinals in Linwood.

Moorestown has reached the sectional semifinals in either Central Jersey Group 3 or South Jersey Group 3 in each of the past six seasons (excluding the 2020-21 season affected by the COVID-19 pandemic).
