EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - A lot of high school sports coaches adopt an "it's all about the kids" mindset.

Middle Township High School boys' basketball coach LaMarr Greer has embodied the concept.

When the Panthers won their first conference tournament title since 1998 last Saturday, Greer accepted the trophy from a Cape-Atlantic League representative and quickly presented it to his players. He then removed himself from the spotlight to applaud his players for their accomplishment.

"Coach LaMarr is a great coach," senior Michael Zarfati said.

Greer was born in Cape May Court House. He began his high school basketball career at Overbrook High School and returned to Middle Township for his final two years. Greer led the Panthers to back-to-back Group 2 state championships in 1993 and 1994. As a senior, he was named a McDonald's All-American and the New Jersey High School Basketball Player of the Year.

The Middle Township graduate played for four seasons at Florida State. He competed alongside future NBA players Bob Sura, James Collins and Randell Jackson, and averaged 11.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists as a senior. Greer proceeded to play as a professional overseas for 16 years.

He returned to his alma mater to take the reins from legendary coach Tom Feraco in 2021. It was fitting for Greer to replace his former coach after his second stint at Middle Township. Feraco won 719 games and three state championships at the helm. Greer was the star player for two of those three state titles.
