FRANKLIN - The Delsea Regional High School baseball team used a seven-run fifth inning to pull away for a 9-1 triumph over Allentown in the Group 3 state semifinals on Wednesday. The Crusaders improved their record to 27-3.
Goldey-Beacom commit George Starr tossed a complete game and allowed only five hits and one earned run. The senior struck out eight batters.
Zach Maxwell and Austin Buchanan both homered to give the Franklinville program a 2-0 lead. Buchanan, Frankie Master and Tyler Schoppe each drove in a pair of runs. Buchanan also scored twice and drew two walks. Master and Ethan DuBois both hit a double in the victory.
Chris Whalen homered for the Redbirds in the top of the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. Dom Inzilla also roped a double in the loss as the visitors were limited to five hits. Allentown concluded its season with a 20-8 record.
Delsea will play Morris Knolls in the Group 3 state final at Veterans Park in Hamilton on Saturday at 4 pm. It will be the first time in program history the Crusaders play in a state championship.
