This Week in Division II
Women’s cross country has had the same top rankings for a few weeks now and many teams enjoyed the weekend off in preparation for upcoming conference meets. Adams State is top ranked followed by Grand Valley State, Augustana (SD), Chico State and Western State. On the men’s side, the Grizzlies are ranked #1 followed by Abilene Christian, Harding, Chico State and Colorado School of Mines. These teams are also in preparation for their conference meet next week. The 2008 Division II Cross Country National meet will be held on November 22nd, 2008 and hosted by Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania.
The top news in the world of D2 field hockey for the week would be the upset of previously undefeated and top-ranked IUP Crimson Hawks by Mercyhurst. #2 Bloomsburg had two wins (including one over #5 Kutztown) this week and will look to regain the top ranking. The Huskies are defending national champions. #3 Shippensburg and #4 Mass-Lowell won two games each.
Football had an exciting week as several ranked teams went head-to-head. On Thursday, #7 Delta State scored a touchdown with 23 seconds remaining to upset #2 North Alabama 35-28. The win puts the Statesmen alone atop the GSC as they defeated then top ranked Valdosta State. The Blazers defeated Harding and now sit at #10. Saturday started with a MIAA battle as #13 Pittsburg State defeated #22 Nebraska-Omaha 35-28, which all but ended the playoff hopes of the Mavericks. Later in the evening, a Top 5 shootout of LSC teams ensued as #3 Abilene Christian handled #4 West Texas A&M 52-35. Grand Valley State is currently top-ranked and defeated Findlay. Other victorious top ranked teams included #5 Northwest Missouri State, #6 Bloomsburg, #8 California (PA), and #9 Minnesota-Duluth. With three weeks remaining in the regular season, regional rankings are released each Monday as we run up to playoff field selection.
Men’s soccer had an exciting week as we saw undefeated, yet unranked Ashland appear at #6 in the poll. The Eagles then proceeded to be tied by Northern Kentucky and then defeated by Northwood. Top-ranked Lynn was upset in overtime by Eckerd as #4 Cal. State-LA was defeated twice (once by #10 Cal-Dominguez Hills). #4 Fort Lewis went to a tie with CSU-Pueblo. Meanwhile #2 Midwestern State and #5 Southern New Hampshire each had wins. In women’s soccer, top ranked Grand Valley State remained undefeated as #2 West Florida, #3 Winona State, and #4 CW Post also enjoyed victories during the week. #5 West Virginia Wesleyan was upset by IUP. Other ranked action included a tie between #6 Seattle Pacific and #14 Western Washington.
Volleyball featured top ranked action this week as #20 West Florida upset #2 Tampa at the University of North Alabama Regional Crossover meet. Top ranked Concordia-St. Paul also defeated #5 Southwest Minnesota State. #3 Cal. State – Bernardino and #4 West Texas A&M won matches this week while #6 Grand Valley State defeated two ranked teams in #24 Indianapolis and #21 Northern Kentucky. Ninth-ranked Washburn swapped victories with fellow MIAA foe #10 Emporia State. Other ranked action included #11 Florida Southern over #20 UWF, while #19 Cal. State – LA defeated #13 UC-San Diego and #17 Lewis also topped Indianapolis.
