Two from D2 inducted into Football HOF
Two former Division II football players were named to the The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame and inducted over the weekend. Along greats like Doug Flutie and Coach Joe Paterno, Ronald McKinnon (North Alabama) and John Randle (Texas A&M-Kingsville) accepted the honor.
McKinnon is the first player to make it to the College HOF from the University of North Alabama. The three-time All-American led the Lions to three consecutive championships from 1993-1995 and remains the only defensive player to win D2′s top award, the Harlon Hill Trophy, which he won during his senior season.
In addition to winning the Hill Trophy, McKinnon was named first-team All-Gulf South Conference four consecutive years and was later named the conference’s Player of the Quarter Century (1971-95). He also holds school records for career tackles (621) and season tackles (175).
Despite not being drafted, McKinnon earned a spot on the Arizona Cardinals roster and played 10 seasons in the NFL, playing his final season with the New Orleans Saints in 2005.
Randle joins three other players and two coaches to become the sixth Javelina in the College HOF. The two-time All-American led his team to a 20-4 record during his two seasons (1988-89), a pair of Lone Star Conference titles and two trips to the playoffs (semi-finals the first year).
Randle played 14 years in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings and the Seattle Seahawks. Named an All-Pro seven times, he recorded double-digit sacks during eight different seasons, including a career-high and league-leading 15.5 sacks in 1997. He retired as the league’s all-time leader in sacks by a defensive tackle (137.5).
While McKinnon has been inducted into the UNA Hall of Fame, Randle has been inducted into the LSC Hall of Fame. Both are members of the Division II Hall of Fame.
