Valdosta State Blazers are D2 Football Champs

THE BLAZERS OF VSU were in familiar territory as they found themselves behind by 11 points at half-time. Valdosta (13-1) had played from behind to win all three playoff games before doing the same against Northwest Missouri State (12-2) at Braly Municipal Stadium in Florence, Alabama. The title is the second in Blazer football history. The other being in 2004. This was the third straight championship defeat for the Bearcats who faced Grand Valley State in 2005 and 2006. NWMSU won titles in 1998 and 1999.

After seeking a bit of revenge by ending Grand Valley’s 40 game winning streak, the Bearcats were favored in the game after Valdosta had a tougher than expected game with California (PA) in the semifinals. First year Head Coach David Dean saw his Blazers perform well in the first half yet were down 14-3 at the break. Momentum completely favored his team when a blocked extra point was returned and made the score 20-19 with a little of three minutes remaining. The Blazers then marched down the field and scored with 22 seconds left to seal the 25-20 victory.

The Championship weekend was also marked by events that named Danny Woodhead (Chadron State) the repeat winner of the Harlon Hill Trophy and inducted another class into the DII Hall of Fame. Woodhead, who became the NCAA all-time leading rusher this season, was voted winner ahead of finalists Bernard Scott (Abilene Christian) and Michael Eubanks (Delta State). The HOF Class of 2007 included Earl Dotson (Texas A&M – Kingsville), Ronald McKinnon (North Alabama), and Mike Turk (Troy State).
