D2 Field Hockey Preview

TWO-TIME DEFENDING CHAMPION Bloomsburg (15 national titles) will attempt to make it sixteen overall and three-in-a-row this fall in NCAA Division II Field Hockey play. The Huskies finished 24-0 for the second consecutive season and will return three All-Americans including 2006 DII National Player of the Year, junior Jamie Vanartsdalen. National runner-up Bentley finished 16-6 last season and will be rebuilding after losing eight seniors, including All-American Mary Rogers, the DII all-time leading scorer. The 2007 squad will be led by two All-Americans including Alyssa Sliney, the Northeast-10 Conference Freshman and Goalkeeper of the Year. Other teams to watch include last season semi-finalists Massachusetts-Lowell and Indiana University-Pennsylvania. IUP upset Shippensburg in the first round of last year’s playoffs and gave Bloomsburg a very tough game before falling 2-0 to the eventual national champion. The Crimson Hawks will return three All-Americans. UM-Lowell, the 2005 National Champion, will return one All-American. The River Hawks earned the other #1 seed opposite Bloomsburg (PSAC Champion) in the 2006 Final Four before being upset by Bentley. They ended the season 18-5. The remaining playoff contenders, Stonehill and Shippensburg, will hope for repeated regular season success with different post-season outcomes. Both schools hosted first-round defeats even though Stonehill was the Northeast-10 Champion and Shippensburg was ranked #2 in the final season poll. Teams looking to break into this year’s post-season are East Stroudsburg and Saint Michael’s.
