North Alabama Dominates Stacked Regional

THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH ALABAMA men’s golf team has won the NCAA Division II South Regional over several highly ranked teams. UNA, the host of the event, was facing a very tough battle at the beginning of the week as all eight teams in the regional were ranked in the D2 Top 20. This included #1 West Florida, #2 Florida Southern and #3 Nova Southeastern. North Alabama was ranked #10 after a fourth place showing in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. However, the Lions lead all three days of competition and routed runner-up, Florida Southern, by 18 strokes.
IN OTHER REGIONAL ACTION, CSU-San Bernardino had the best score nation-wide in a strong West Regional scoring 841 (-11). While the next two teams in the West finals, Grand Canyon 844 (-8) and Sonoma State 848 (-4), were the only other schools, along with North Alabama, 847 (-5), to score below par out of the 80 teams participating in D2 action. The regional winners and automatic qualifiers to the D2 Finals in Allendale, Michigan are Belmont Abbey (Atlantic), Washburn (Central), Fairmont State (East), Ferris State (Great Lakes), LeMoyne (Northeast), Western New Mexico (Northwest), Cameron (South Central), North Alabama (South), Columbus State (Southeast), and CSU-San Bernardino (West).
